Project Sticker Shock
Week of December 12-15, 2011
Local Students Send a Message to Adults with Project Sticker Shock
Students from Freeport, Falmouth and Yarmouth High Schools, collaborated with their towns Police Departments and Casco Bay CAN to visit local stores and promote Project Sticker Shock, a national and state-wide youth alcohol prevention project.
Thirty-three students volunteered to be a part of the project and bring awareness to the ramifications of purchasing alcohol for underage individuals by placing awareness stickers provided by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse on beverage packages. The project was expanded this year to include specially designed stickers on pizza box toppers with the theme, "If you care about teens, don't provide the means."
Lieutenant, Dean Perry of the Yarmouth police department said that "when members of a community work together especially with something as topical and important as substance abuse by minors, the result is inevitably positive."
Fourteen local businesses including local grocery stores, gas stations, and pizza restaurants embraced the project and invited the youth volunteers in to place the awareness stickers on their products. Freeport volunteer, Becca Lane said she got involved with the project because it is a positive way to raise awareness, "I just want to do what I can to hopefully reduce underage drinking and this project informs people that it is a serious crime." Volunteers, local law enforcement agencies, and participating businesses are planning to collaborate to host the project again in the Spring during prom and graduation.

Freeport Students Send A Message to Adults with Project Sticker Shock
May 2011 - Students from Freeport High School collaborated with the Freeport Police Department and Casco Bay CAN to visit local stores and promote Project Sticker Shock, a national and state-wide program. The students volunteered to be a part of the project and bring
awareness to the ramifications of purchasing alcohol for underage individuals by placing awareness stickers provided by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse on beverage packages. Local retailers participated in the project.
Officer Mike McManus said it is "gratifying to see young people taking an active role in helping their friends stay safe by proactive actions like this program. During Prom and Graduation season it is imperative to remind adults of the penalties for supplying alcohol to minors."
Volunteer Sadie Russell thought the project was a great way to "address underage drinking and send a message to others that they want the end of the school year to be safe and not have to read about anyone hurt in the paper."
Volunteers wore t-shirts designed by fellow classmates to further spread the message "If you care about teens, don't provide the means." Project Sticker Shock is held annually, during the Spring and holiday season. Check out our Happenings page for the next "Project Sticker Shock" event.
